California Fishing License 2026: Official CDFW Fees, Report Cards & Validations
California fishing license 2026: resident $64.54, nonresident $174.14, report card and validation fees, eligibility, and official CDFW links.
California does not stop at the base sport-fishing license. Report cards, validations, and pier rules can still apply when the angler is under 16, fishing from a public pier, or using a free-fishing day — the card or validation, not the base license, is often the real trip decision.
Ocean Enhancement matters south of Point Arguello, the Second Rod Validation matters inland, and crab or lobster duties depend on the gear and species. If a card is missing, a duplicate license does not recreate it automatically — report cards and licenses are replaced through separate CDFW processes with separate fees. nrm.dfg.ca
Senior, veteran, and disability pricing exists, but none of it is a blanket free path for every angler. California still expects the right product for the right species, and harvest-reporting deadlines run on their own calendar, separate from the 365-day license clock.
California Report Cards, Validations, and Pier Rules
| Topic | What to check |

| South of Point Arguello | Ocean Enhancement Validation is required for ocean fishing south of Point Arguello (Santa Barbara County), except when fishing under a One-Day or Two-Day license . |
| Second rod inland | Two rods or lines in inland waters need the Second Rod Validation, except in waters restricted to artificial lures or barbless hooks; it is not required in ocean waters . |
| Crab trap validation exception (new for 2026) | Starting January 1, 2026, anglers using crab trap(s) aboard a Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel (CPFV) no longer need the Recreational Crab Trap Validation . |
| Report-card reporting deadlines | Salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon cards must be reported by January 31 of the following year (late window through April 1); spiny lobster is due by April 30 (late window through July 1) . |

FAQs
Do California public-pier anglers still need report cards?
Yes, when the species requires one. A qualifying public pier only removes the base sport-fishing license requirement; sturgeon and spiny lobster report cards are still mandatory on a public pier.
Do kids need California report cards?
Yes. Anglers under 16 are exempt from the base license but must still carry the correct report card when fishing for steelhead, sturgeon, spiny lobster, or North Coast salmon.
Is there a free senior fishing license in California?
No blanket free senior license exists. Residents 65+ qualify for the $10.04 Reduced-Fee license only with SSI or CAPI benefits, purchased annually at a CDFW office; separate free categories cover blindness, mobility impairment, developmental disability, and low-income Native American status.
Do free fishing days remove report-card requirements?
No. Report cards for sturgeon, spiny lobster, steelhead, and North Coast salmon remain required even on official free fishing days.
